My favorite class is American Sign Language. I'm having so much fun learning it - the grammar is throwing me a little, but I can fingerspell now (slowly) and introduce myself and someone else and say a couple other greeting things. I wish I had someone to practice with outside of class though. Signing to myself only goes so far. But it still makes me absurdly happy. I've been practicing on my family a little - Dad makes fun of me a bit, responding with really stupid charades or just wiggling his hands wildly, but it's good practice for me even if he's being insulting. It's so fun in class - we get told to break into groups and practice a lot, and yesterday I ran out of people around me and got trapped in a corner - so I practiced with someone across the room. :D It's amazing how much we can communicate even with a very limited vocabulary.

I wanna learn! :D Seriously. I used to know the alphabet. Was always fascinated by it.

I am studying language translation and interpretation, so yeah I want to become an interpreter, and I am loving my career and my faculty too (which is the faculty of philosophy and humanities) I am loving this place, even though the philosophy class is not that cool,  I really like philosophy but my teacher is just stupid.

Re: College and Work Part 2!

Today I found out my Chem lab TA went to my high school! Not only that, but she also was in orchestra! Not only THAT, but we were in orchestra AT THE SAME TIME. She's two years younger than me. WEEEEIIIIIRD. Unrelatedly, she's an awesome TA.

ASL continues to be awesome. Getting harder, though. I am strongly considering starting a study group with anyone who will show up. The teacher and TA keep asking me to say stuff (like what I did last Wednesday or whatever, just vocab practice basically) and I keep getting the deer-in-the-headlights moment.

My old philosophy professor required us to write in depth essays on the thought process of Homer Simpson.  It was pretty awesome and any season of the show becomes a thousand times better after you do it.

Re: College and Work Part 2!

I am so, so happy that next week is Spring Break. Gonna finally catch up with people (YES THAT MEANS YOU, SATURNINE13) and get seriously drunk and giggly online. I promise to post something ridiculous while smashed off my gourd (mixing metaphors?) and prove that yes, I can type perfectly when I'm wasted. We should start a pool on what topic I'll post in and how many typos crop up.

Also, freaking out that next week is Sprink Break. Halfway already?! But my grades so far are miserable! J-term sucked out all my oomph and I'm just getting back into the swing of things! :(

Women getting married are the worst customers in the world to deal with. They waste hours of your time tweaking spacing on a stupid wedding invitation and then look at you like you're retarded when you tell them that's $200.

That pretty much sums up it up, completely.

Re: College and Work Part 2!

FREE AT LAST

I finished finals today. Such a huge relief to have that over! I had no idea school could be so utterly devastating. At least you can leave work at work, you know? OH WELL IT'S OVER. FOR NOW.

Next semester I'm taking Organic Chemistry, Ecology, and Physics I. All of them are labs, and some even have EXTRA labs, and - ugh it will be crushingly terrible but OH WELL. I'm almost able to take interesting classes! Just one more year of stupid shit and then I can take the most awesome classes ever!

I am so deliriously happy that this semester is over, oh my gosh.

Heh, I'm taking Organic Chemistry next semester as well, lisette! XD Good times.

Also, I hope your Physics teacher is better than mine was. ><

Re: College and Work Part 2!

Uni just offered me housing! Help me decide whether to take them up on it!

The dorm is 21+ mixed men and women, five floors of single rooms. For every 34 people there is a tiny kitchenette, and two bathrooms with a total of four showers (probably two for men and two for women). The rooms are claustrophobic, just big enough to turn around in. Each room has a window 8 inches wide by 61 inches tall, a bed, a desk and chair, and a dresser. The semester would cost $3100 plus a meal plan or my own food. In exchange I would get away from my family, and I wouldn't have to commute an hour and a half to two hours every day. I originally applied to lend stability to my living situation, but Dad has a consulting job starting the end of the month and going for six months and he'll be able to support us for another year.

In summary: Money-wise, I think it evens out between the car and the housing. Time-wise, being on campus would save me about two hours a day. Socially, I would be a little lonelier but not significantly so. Family-wise, it would get me away from my family. Also family-wise, my family needs me right now as emotional and practical support. My original reason for applying, stability, is now a moot point. Any input?

Re: College and Work Part 2!

Where do you think you would be happier?

Re: College and Work Part 2!

I think I would be equally happy at either location, barring unforeseen circumstances. It is a very difficult decision.

Re: College and Work Part 2!

You don't give any compelling reasons not to live in the dorm, and repeat several reasons for not living at home, so judging from your post it looks like you'd prefer the dorm and aren't leaping at it out of some misguided guilty sense of duty towards your family, who can and should learn not to use you as a crutch.

However, it would mean you are further away, and you already never visit me when you're two blocks away. When you're 2 hours away I can look forward to your next visit in 2012 perhaps. ;o; But no seriously do what you think will contribute to your day-to-day sanity.
