Topic: MOVING

AHHH I'M MOVING.

I am mostly making this thread because I can't pack any more boxes and am quivering with anxiety. I just packed my PS2 and Dynasty Warriors. @_@

One of the apartments we've applied to (the one I prefer) has said yes. The other place (the one my bro prefers) has not yet replied, but if they say yes we don't know what we'll do. The places are roughly equal in quality, and I honestly believe we would be happy at either place.

Advice, moral support, personal experiences, all would be welcome! I have moved once in my life (technically twice, but the other time I was a baby), so I am not too great at this moving stuff, especially as this is the first time it will be out on my own!

Re: MOVING

Lists and minutiae are soothing. :D Have you considered what to get for the kitchen and bathroom? Would you like to invite people to get flat-warming presents? Things like can openers, toilet paper, air fresheners, garbage bags... They actually make good, useful presents, and remembering OH YEAH WE'LL NEED A GARBAGE CAN is always handy. :D You'll need to change your address with your bank, the postal service, and possibly City Hall and the DMV? I'm not sure about those two. There are forms at the post office, and you can call your bank or probably change it online.

If they both say yes, do rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock.

Got questions, concerns, zombies at your door? Send me a message! I don't bite... unless you're marinated.

Re: MOVING

Everyone always picks Spock :\

When I was in college student housing once moved me twice during finals week.  Now moving an apartment with more than 12 hours feels like I'm being spoilt.

Re: MOVING

Flip a coin to determine which apartment you go for, or make a list of pros and cons if you gotta be that way about it. See what you can afford and make a Target/K-Mart/Walmart trip to stock the place out (yes, you'll be making at least a couple). Designate tasks/chores based on who prefers what, alternate on the things you both hate. I dunno, you'll figure it all out I'm sure!

Re: MOVING

I appreciate all the advice and welcome more!

Here's a question: how do I pack five billion books, and how much will my friends hate me after moving them all? :D

We still haven't decided which apartment we'll get. I feel much better knowing that no matter what we decide, we won't be homeless in a month's time.

Re: MOVING

Don't be a dumbass like me and move all your books in one huge box. Split them up. Put a layer of them in every box!

Re: MOVING

If one of your friends is super strong like me, you can move all your books in 1-3 boxes.

Also, I would suggest wrapping dishes in spare towels and such to prevent breakage. Worked for me several times!

Re: MOVING

Smaaaaaaall boxes of books. There'll be more, yeah, but you can actually carry them. And I won't hate you! XD Fragile items and clothes are best packing buddies.

Re: MOVING

Try not to buy cardboard boxes. There are so many cafes and other food service people willing to give you free ones so they don't have to take care of them themselves.
Little steps at a time. Don't exhaust yourself on the project too soon. If you have friends willing to help (especially with driving as to save you on moving truck costs), it's always a plus.
Pack orderly. Books in one box, games in another, etc. Not "Everything in this room goes in these boxes". Orderly packing makes for less headachey unpacking. Perhaps even packing things by priority as well ("everything I may not want/need for a long time goes in this box so that I can worry about unpacking it last... if not years from now")

That's the best advice I can give you. Good luck! :D

Re: MOVING

Oh, for sure. Liquor stores also have tons of boxes they can't wait to unload on people. Costco/Sam's Club too!

Re: MOVING

Liquor cases are also built to hold 35-40 pounds so they're a better option than the boxes packages come in!

Re: MOVING

This packing advice is excellent. Keep it coming!

There are so many things we have to buy. @_@ Just for furniture, we need a living room set and a dining set and lamps and things. And bookcases. Lots and lots of bookcases. Any guidance on that topic, and what other things we may need to buy to outfit the new place?

Re: MOVING

Fast food places in particular have a lot of boxes that they will give you. Trust me.

Anyways, for books. Do not lay them down flat, because they will more likely burst out the bottom of the book. Try to sort between hard and soft covers, too, to minimalize possible damage. If you have anything like thin baby blankets, putting them in between layers of books in the boxes will also help with damage control.

Re: MOVING

You can sometimes find passable furniture at Goodwill. We've got some bookcases if you want them - they're just particleboard, but they've held up under the weight of the Encyclopedia Britannica for decades, so they're certainly sturdy. I guess there's also some Ikea store or something where they sell cheap furniture idk. I know you've already got things to put the game systems on, and desks & chairs for the both of you... Any storage you might need for linens or something? A set of flatware? Curtains for great privacy?

If you want any advice for kitchen things, just gimme the word. :D

P.S. Fast food boxes smell like fast food.

Make sure the carpet matches the drapes.

Mmm, not necessarily. The ones that we often give away are the boxes full of bags of fries that came out of the freezer. So if anything, they smell like cold potato.

Re: MOVING

One day closer to signing the lease. @_@ So boooooored. There are only 2 games unpacked, Resident Evil 5 and FFXIII, plus Megaman 9 on the PS3.

I wanna make a latch hook welcome mat for the new place. What's something geeky I can do for a welcome mat?
